Mel Gibson is back in the spotlight after a car accident that could have killed him.
It happened Sunday night just days after Gibson had returned from a fishing vacation in Fiji on his private jet. He was reportedly there with 2 of his sons to get away from the turmoil surrounding his ex-girlfriend Oksana Girgorieva.
"Gibson was reportedly driving alone along Malibu Canyon Road when he suddenly lost control of his Maserati and slammed into a rock wall. Miraculously, he was not hurt," an INSIDE EDITION correspondent reported from the scene.
Gibson had custody of his baby daughter Lucia over the weekend and had returned the child to Oksana less than 2 hours before he crashed, according to RadarOnline.com.
Officers from the California highway patrol rushed to the scene, where Gibson reportedly told them, "I don't know how the car left the roadway."
Gibson was asked if he'd fallen asleep at the wheel, but did not give a clear answer to that question, police said. The police report said, "For unknown reasons, Mr. Gibson steered his car to the right and struck the rock hillside."
The report also said after giving a statement, "He received a ride home from a friend. DUI is not suspected in the accident."
Gibson's rep was quoted as saying, "He's fine."
Gibson has been keeping a low profile ever since the release of his ranting and raving phone calls to Oksana, who accused him of attacking her.
