Friends of Elizabeth Taylor mourn her loss, but say they are glad she is finally out of pain. INSIDE EDITION has more.
We're learning more about the final days of Elizabeth Taylor and the pain she heroically battled right to the end.
"I went there last night to say goodbye, I knew she was going," said Taylor's close friend Carole Bayer Sager, who visited the star at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center hours before she died. She revealed on Piers Morgan Tonight that the screen legend was in greater pain than most people realized.
"This year she fractured both of her knees and literally had to be carried out of the wheelchair and out of the hospital bed," she said.
Actress Debbie Reynolds, who remained a dear friend even after her husband Eddie Fisher famously left her for Taylor in 1959, says Taylor suffered "a lot of pain" due to congestive heart failure.
Reynolds said, "God bless her. She is on to a better place. I'm happy that she is out of her pain."
And Reynolds's daughter, Carrie Fisher, paid tribute to Taylor via Twitter:
"If my father had to divorce my mother for anyone -- I'm so grateful that it was Elizabeth."
She says Taylor was upset that she was bedridden and confined to a wheelchair.
"She was someone who really enjoyed having a vital life. And to be sort of bedridden like that, she wasn't enjoying herself," Fisher told Piers Morgan Tonight.
On the Today show, Taylor's longtime publicist Sally Morrison said Taylor realized she was close to death.
"I think she was very aware of the seriousness of her condition. She had been in the hospital a long time," said Morrison.
Taylor is expected to be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Cemetery, near her great friend Michael Jackson.
On newspaper front pages around the world today, from Austria to Buenos Aires to Taiwan, Taylor's passing is being mourned.
At a concert in Pittsburgh last night, Elton John sang "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," and dedicated it to Taylor:
"God bless you, Elizabeth -- God knows how we're going to replace you," he said.
