Oprah Winfrey's OWN Will Not Save Cancelled Soaps

Airdate: 04/22/2011

Talk show titan Oprah Winfrey took to YouTube to say she won't be saving the just cancelled soap operas All My Children and One Life to Live.

Fans had wanted Winfrey, who is a big fan of the soaps, to air them on her new cable network, OWN.

"Here is the bone marrow truth. The soaps have been an institution in broadcast history and television because they had the support of the audience. There are just not enough people at home in the daytime to watch them," Winfrey said on YouTube.

Soap fans have been bombarding Winfrey's message boards with these heartfelt pleas:

"Oprah, won't you consider taking over All My Children & One Life?"

"They would make a great addition to your new network :)"

"Believe me, if there was a dime left to be made from them on broadcast television it would still be happening. And so because all good things come to an end, and all good things have their time, as do the soaps, as does The Oprah Winfrey Show, I will not be taking on the responsibility of trying to revive an institution," said Winfrey.

Oprah says she knows how soap fans feel because she was heartbroken herself when her favorite show Mary Tyler Moore was cancelled in 1977.
