47-year-old Kelly Preston is pregnant, a year after the tragic death of her son. And the nation is thrilled for the actress and her husband, John Travolta.
The couple announced the news overnight on Travolta's web site, saying, "It's impossible to keep a secret, especially one as wonderful as this. We want to be the first to share this great news with everyone that we are expecting a new addition to our family."
Kelly is said to be three months along. Just 11 days ago she was photographed in Los Angeles wearing a long, loose dress to hide her growing baby bump.
It was just 16 months ago that 16-year-old Jett Travolta, who suffered from autism, died after hitting his head on a bathtub during a seizure.
"The loss of a child is really an extraordinary stress. It's a huge grief. It's just totally incapacitating. The desire to replace that child, you can't really replace it, but to have another child in its place is quite strong," said fertility specialist Dr. Nicole Noyes.
The now estranged John and Elizabeth Edwards conceived two children through fertility treatments after the tragic death of their son Wade in 1996. Elizabeth was 48 when her daughter Emma Claire was born. She was one year older than Kelly Preston. Fertility experts say that it's highly improbable for a woman in her late 40's to get pregnant without medical assistance.
Dr. Noyes said, "By the time a woman is 40, she only has about three percent of the eggs left that she started with, and it's just a lot harder. There are less eggs, and lesser quality eggs."
Actress Adrienne Barbeau, a major sex symbol from the 80's, gave birth to twin boys when she was 51.
"There were a lot of people who were like, 'Are you kidding? At this age? What where you thinking?' " said Barbeau.
Barbeau's healthy, handsome sons, William and Walker, are now 13.
"All I think is that this can only bring joy into their lives, and more love," Barbeau said.
Backstage at Dancing with the Stars, the pregnancy was on the minds of former contestants Joey Fatone and Melissa Rycroft.
Fatone said, "That is awesome!"
"Coming from one new dad to another future new dad," added Rycroft.
Fatone said, "Yeah, I got a 4-month old. You know what that means? Diapers all over again."
The Travoltas' daughter, 10-year-old Ella, is said to be overjoyed about becoming a big sister. It's wonderful news for a family that has suffered great loss.
