Miss Universe Facing Possible Jail Time After Taj Mahal Visit
Miss Universe is being threatened with jail time over photos taken in front of India’s famed Taj Mahal.
Charges were filed against the reigning 21-year-old Miss Universe for violating a law that forbids commercial photo shoots at the Islamic shrine.
Olivia Culpo of Rhode Island posed wearing red shoes with five inch heels for a video diary of her trip to India that was sponsored in part by a shoe company.
The photo shoot was at the exact spot where an iconic photo of Princess Diana was taken. Oprah also posed at the site, but not for a commercial.
Culpo told her hometown newspaper The Providence Journal she had objected to posing in the shoes at the famed temple to love.
She said, “You know I didn't want to do it. I have to do what I’m told. This is my job. Honestly, I did at one point say out loud, 'Isn't this a little inappropriate?' It's really upsetting because I loved my visit to India and I would love nothing more than to go back.”
A spokesman for the Miss Universe organization apologized to the people of India: "The filming that took place outside the Taj Mahal was never intended to be used as a commercial. We sincerely apologize."
Miss Universe had been feted throughout her ten day trip to India. But now she could face a maximum two years behind bars.
