That man was Mike Nichols who died suddenly of cardiac arrest at age 83.
Nichols was a fixture in New York, living in an apartment on Fifth Avenue with his wife of 26 years, ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer.
Theirs was a love story for the ages. The legendary director and the legendary newswoman were last seen just two weeks ago at the funeral of fashion designer Oscar de la Renta.
On the morning shows, there was an outpouring of sympathy for Diane Sawyer who lost her 94-year-old mother less than a month ago.
Robin Roberts said on Good Morning America, “We're thinking of you Diane, we are glad you have your beautiful family around you."
Gayle King said on CBS This Morning, “Such a brilliant, loving man. We're all thinking of Diane today."
Mike Nichols directed some of the most memorable movies of all time including The Graduate, and Working Girl with Melanie Griffith.
Nichols was incredibly versatile, having won Oscar, TONY, Grammy and Emmy awards. When such a special man dies, tears tell the tale.
