On Saturday night, the girls had dinner at a restaurant in lower Manhattan with some friends – but their dad was nowhere to be seen.

Surprisingly, he did not check in to the famed Waldorf Astoria Hotel – where every U.S. president has stayed since 1932.

The Waldorf Astoria was owned by Hilton Hotels until last year, when it was sold to a Chinese company closely tied to the Chinese government. It reportedly led the president's security advisers to be concerned that the presidential suite could be bugged.

The presidential suite, where 14 presidents have previously stayed, comes with a boardroom and a private office - for $4,000 per night.

But instead, Obama headed a few blocks away, where he opted for another luxurious hotel with views over the East River. Bomb-sniffing dogs were seen checking bags out front.

By staying at the hotel, the President is saving taxpayers money; the rate is $2,000 per night - half the price of the Waldorf.
