It's only August but already there’s a Halloween costume courting controversy.
Several online retailers will be selling a Caitlyn Jenner costume this fall, according to reports.
The costume includes a white corset – like that the reality TV star wore on her famous Vanity Fair cover – as well as a long brown wig and a sash.
One website, which shows a man modeling the $75 costume, says it is “unisex."
Among the retailers, Spirit Halloween is planning to sell the costume at its stores in New York City this fall, the New York Daily News reported.
Trisha Lombardo of Spirit Halloween said the costume was intended to "celebrate" Jenner, calling her: "The most important, real-life superhero of the year."
“At Spirit Halloween, we create a wide range of costumes that are often based upon celebrities, public figures, heroes and superheroes,” she said. “We feel that Caitlyn Jenner is all of the above and that she should be celebrated. The Caitlyn Jenner costume reflects just that.”
But some social media users slammed the costume, calling it insensitive and transphobic.
I'm always down to educate but having to explain why Caitlyn Jenner costumes are transphobic and bad is disheartening.— thick white goddess (@emfection) August 25, 2015
Vincent Villano of the National Center for Transgender Equality added: “There’s no tasteful way to celebrate Caitlyn Jenner or respect transgender people this way on the one night of the year when people use their most twisted imaginations to pretend to be villains and monsters.”
There is also a Change.org petition asking Spirit Halloween not to sell the costume.
"Do not turn Cailtyn Jenner into a costume,” the petition’s creator, Addison Vincent, wrote. “Your profit will only lead to greater transphobia and marginalization of an already at-risk community.”
