Manhunt Underway For 3 Suspects in Illinois After Veteran Cop Was Shot Dead

A massive manhunt is underway for three suspects after an officer was shot and killed near Chicago.

Lake County Undersheriff Raymond Rose said the slain officer, 52-year-old Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz, was following "suspicious" people on foot on Tuesday morning when he was shot and killed in Fox Lake, 55 miles north of Chicago.

Rose told the Chicago Tribune that other responding officers found him in a marshy area in the city of Fox Lake and that he had been stripped of his gun and other equipment.

Gliniewicz, who worked for the Fox Lake Police, was a 30-year veteran of the force.

Fox Lake Mayor Donny Schmit said the officer, a married father-of-four, was a "dear friend."

"We lost a family member," Schmit said. "His commitment to the people of this community has been unmatched and will be dearly missed."

Law enforcement officers are using helicopters and dogs for their search.

Residents have been asked to remain inside their homes and businesses, while some schools have been placed on lockdown.

The suspects have been described as two white men and one black man.
