The child, Aavielle Wakefield, was hit in the chest while riding in a car on Thursday and was rushed to a children’s hospital where she later died.

According to reports, the child’s mother was driving with the baby as the passenger and only the infant was struck. Reports say officials suspect the gunfire came from an apartment building and no arrests have been made.

The news of the baby's death angered NBA star LeBron James, who plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers, and grew up near the city in Akron, Ohio.

Williams told his officers to stay in the area as long as it takes to find the shooter responsible.

Gun violence throughout September made it the city’s deadliest ever month. Aavielle is the third young child killed in the city’s East Side in the past month, according to reports.

A Gofundme page has been set up for the baby's family.
