Dozens of Shots Fired From High-Powered Rifle During 5-Hour Standoff With San Diego Cops

A San Diego neighborhood was lock downed for five hours after shooter with high-powered rifle opened fire on police, authorities said.

Police locked down a San Diego neighborhood on Wednesday for five hours during a tense standoff with a gunmen who opened fire on cops with a high-powered rifle, authorities said.

The suspect was identified by police as Titus Colbert, 33. He surrendered to police after flashbangs were thrown into an apartment where he was hunkered down, authorities said.The home belonged to a woman who called in a domestic violence complaint, police said. 

Dozens of officers and SWAT team members swarmed the apartment building north of downtown in the city's Bankers Hill neighborhood before 10 a.m. local time, police said. 

The suspect opened fire as soon as police arrived on the scene, San Diego police told KSWB. though dozens of rounds were fired, there were no immediate reports of injuries.

People in homes, businesses and schools in the area were told to shelter in place. 

"Stay away from all windows until further notice and shelter in place," police announced. "Residents stay inside and public stay out of area."

At the nearby airport, the Associated Press reports flights were barred from landing due to the active shooter situation.

According to the LA Times, police had initially gone to the apartment building on a domestic violence report.
