Man Shot on Texas Lake by Pirates

While jet skiing with his wife on a Texas lake, a man is shot by pirates when the couple crossed into Mexican territory. INSIDE EDITION has the story.

We're for the first time from the wife who was ambushed by pirates as she and her husband rode jet skis on a lake that straddles the U.S.- Mexico border.

30-year-old David Hartley was shot in the back of the head and his 29-year-old wife Tiffany frantically called 911.

911: Are you sure that your husband got shot?

Caller: Yes. In his head.

Caller: He was thrown off the jet ski and I couldn't pick him up to get him on mine.

911: Did you see anybody?

Caller: There were three boats, and they came back looking at me.

Tiffany told police she dodged a hail of bullets escaping from the pirates, and had to make the gut-wrenching decision to leave her fatally-wounded husband behind. Her 911 call continued with,

Caller: He was thrown off the jet ski and I couldn't pick him up to get him on mine.

Speaking for the first time since the tragedy, Tiffany says, "It's a miracle I'm even here."

They knew it was dangerous to jet ski on the lake, but, she said, "We decided if someone came after us, we were going to high-tail it out of there. We knew we could outrun them. Our motto was 'No Fear.' " (Source: Denver Post)

The shocking ambush took place on Falcon lake. One side is U.S. territory, the other belongs to Mexico.

The Hartleys were married eight years and loved the outdoors and sightseeing. They went scub-diving on a recent trip to Key West, Florida. The couple had set out to see a partially-submerged church on the Mexican side of the lake.

David's heartbroken step-mother is shocked by his murder, saying, "He was just a wonderful man who loved life."
