Football star Doug Flutie lost both parents within one hour, the Heisman Trophy winner posted on Facebook.
Football legend Doug Flutie lost his father Wednesday morning and less than an hour later, the Heisman Trophy winner suffered the death of his mother from a sudden heart attack.
“They say you can die of a broken heart and I believe it,” Flutie, 53, wrote on his Facebook page.
His father, Dick, died from a heart attack after battling an illness. His mother, Joan, died not long after, from the same affliction.

“It is with a heavy heart that I am making this statement,” Flutie wrote. “This morning my family experienced the tragic loss of my father, Dick and mother, Joan."

“The most important part of their 56 years of marriage was providing opportunities to their children,” he said. “My parents were always there for their children, from the days my Dad coached as kids and my Mom would work the concession stands.”

Flutie spent 12 seasons in the NFL after playing in the USFL and the Canadian Football League. His U.S. teams included the New England Patriots, Buffalo Bills, Sand Diego Chargers and Chicago Bears.
He won the Heisman in 1984 as the quarterback for Boston College, where he threw a famous “Hail Mary” pass in the final minute of a game against the University of Miami Hurricanes, cinching a 47-45 win.
