Pet Chimp Goes on a Rampage in Neighborhood

A pet chimpanzee escapes from its home and goes berserk, smashing the window of a police car, and it's all caught on tape. INSIDE EDITION has the story.

A 300-pound escaped chimp terrorizes a neighborhood and does quite a number on a police car.

"He's jumping on the cop car—he's smashing it up!" a witness says in the video.

Michael Abram videotaped the whole nightmare from a nearby house. He told INSIDE EDITION, "I said, 'Get the guns, because if he gets in here, we're going to have to shoot him.' "

The drama began when a female pet chimp escaped from its owner in Kansas City. First it pounded on a pickup and other vehicles, terrorizing residents.

As the chimp went crazy, Michael's unsuspecting friend Tonya Jennings pulled up in her car. She told INSIDE EDITION, "I could feel my car start to shake, and you can hear her pounding on the car."

Then the chimp got hold of a wheeled trash can and rammed it into a cop car. It leaped onto the hood, jumping up and down and shattering the windshield.

An animal control officer ducked into the police car and slammed the door as the rampaging chimp went nuts.

"It jumped on top of the cop car and Donkey Kong smashes it," said Michael.

The officer put some distance between him and the chimp. Then an official fired a tranquilizer dart. The chimp cried out as the tranquilizer took effect.

The groggy chimp wandered around for a while before its owner got it back into a cage.
