Sunday night's award ceremony has been branded the most foul-mouthed Globes ever as the NBC censors hit the mute button nine times.

During his opening monologue, the British comic said: “If you do win, no one cares about the award more than you do. The award is worthless.”

He introduced the first presenter, Matt Damon, as “the only one Ben Affleck hasn’t cheated on.”

At one point, Gervais asked Mel Gibson a question so inappropriate for television, that it did not air and the camera panned to audience reactions.

It turns out that Gervais asked: “What the f*** does sugar t**** mean anyway?" It was a reference to Gibson’s famous 2006 traffic stop when the drunk actor called a female police officer “sugar t****.”

One of night's most memorable moments came from Sylvester Stallone, who received a standing ovation when he won for Best Supporting Actor for Creed.

"I want to thank my imaginary friend Rocky Balboa for being the best friend I ever had,” he said.

Sly hit the red carpet with his wife Jennifer Flavin and three daughters.

Taraji P. Henson won for her role as “Cookie” in Empire and handed out cookies as she made her way to the stage and declared: "Cookies for everyone tonight!”

And when organizers tried to cut off her speech, she hit back.

“Wait a minute. I waited 20 years for this. You gon' wait," the actress said as the teleprompter asked her to wrap it up. "Yeah, you gon' give me a little more time."

Denzel Washington took to the stage with his family to collect the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement.

The big winner of the night was The Revenant, which took home Best Picture: Drama, Best Actor and Best Director.

When the night ended and the credits rolled on, Gervais took to the stage again to say his goodbyes but still managed to squeeze another gag in, saying, "From myself and Mel Gibson -- shalom" - a reference to the embattled Oscar winner's anti-Semitic remarks.
