Second Man Arrested In Execution of Boy, 9, Killed Over His Dad's Gang Ties: Cops
A second suspect was arrested in the execution of a nine-year-old boy, who police believe was lured into a Chicago alley and shot because of his fathers alleged gang ties.
Dwright Boone-Doty, 22, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the November killing of little Tyshawn Lee, which authorities called an “execution.”
“Dwright Boone-Dotys reprehensible acts define barbarism & cowardice. Today, he will face justice for killing Tyshawn,” Anthony Guglielmi, communications director for the Chicago Police Department, tweeted Tuesday.
Boone-Doty has been charged with five felony offenses in connection with three separate cases and was already in custody on unrelated gun charges when he was arrested for the little boy’s murder, county records show.
He has also been charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm in connection to the Oct. 18 killing of Brianna Jenkins and shooting of Deshari Bowens, according to reports.
Tyshawn was on his way to his grandma’s home when was murdered on the South Side, police said. His basketball, which he took everywhere, lay near his body.
“Tyshawn Lee was murdered in probably the most abhorrent, cowardly, unfathomable crime that I’ve witnessed in 35 years of policing,” Chicago Police Superintendent Gary McCarthy said at the time.
Police have already charged 27-year-old Corey Morgan with murder in the child’s death but believed two other suspects had been involved.
A murder warrant was issued for the third man, identified as Kevin Edwards, McCarthy had said.
“All three are in the same gang. I can tell you this: they are going to be obliterated. That gang just signed its own death warrant,” McCarthy said after Morgan’s arrest.
Morgan has repeatedly denied having any involvement in killing the child, who was reportedly shot at such close range that he had powder burns on his face.
Tyshawn’s father, 25-year-old Pierre Stokes, is a convicted felon who officials believe is involved with a rival gang. He had not cooperated with investigators after his son’s murder, McCarthy said.
Stokes has denied being in a gang or that he has been uncooperative, telling reporters: “I don’t know things. I don’t know unless somebody come tell me something. So I can’t be cooperative with something I don’t know.”
Fr. Michael Pfleger, a priest with St. Sabina who had said he would personally help anyone who came forward with information about those responsible for killing Tyshawn, took to social media after Boone-Doty was arrested.
"I am glad that a second person will be charged today in the execution of Tyshawn Lee...this Murder took the City and the Nation to a new Low....To execute a 9 year old because of anger at his Father is Unacceptable and Sick!!!!" Pfleger wrote on Facebook.
The Chicago Police Department is expected to hold a press conference Tuesday to announce the most recent arrest.
