Newborn With Its Umbilical Cord Still Attached Was Abandoned in Front of a Suburban Home

Arizona police are looking for the parents of a newborn abandoned in front of a suburban home.

Arizona police are searching for the parents of a newborn girl who was abandoned, with her umbilical cord attached, in front of a Phoenix house, police said.

The seven-pound, eight-ounce infant is hospitalized, but appears healthy, police said. She was hours old when a couple found her in an irrigation box fronting their home.

"At this point, our detectives have kind of exhausted all of our initial possible leads that we had," said Mesa Police Department spokesman Steve Berry at a news conference, The Associated Press reported.

"We have had no success in locating either mom or dad for this child," he said.

James McCulloh saw a baby carrier while standing on his porch, KPHO reported. He removed a metal panel that was on top of it, and saw an infant.

"I saw him jump 20 feet, and he said, 'There's a baby in it,'" his wife, Roseanne, said. "I ran over there. She wasn't blue. I touched her little arm, and I opened up the blanket. She was just beautiful."

The couple brought the baby inside and called 911. Roseanne McCulloh warmed the blanket in a microwave and James cleaned the infant.

Paramedics took the child to a hospital.

Roseanne said the baby may have been left about 2 a.m. because her daughter heard a noise through her window.

Police said they don't believe the child was born at a medical center because the infant would not have been released with her umbilical cord in place.

Arizona has a safe haven law, and authorities said they did not know why the child was abandoned because there is a fire station less than a mile away.

The baby has black hair and is Hispanic or Native American, police said. Anyone with information is asked to call authorities.

For now, the infant is being called "Baby Jane."
