Two adult male victims were soon confirmed dead and police later said the deaths were the result of a murder-suicide.

A university-wide campus alert system first warned parents and students of the possible danger via Twitter just before 10 a.m. local time.

According to the alert, the shooting occurred at an engineering facility.

"Shooting at Engineering 4. Go to secure location and deny entry (lockdown) now!" the tweet read, before the alert system went silent.

Less than an hour later, CNN reported two victims but no suspect was immediately identified.

As the public held its collective breath, students and staff used social media from inside campus buildings to show their response to the lockdown.
In one photo, a student was seen using a belt on a door hinge to block anyone from entering. Another showed a door barricaded with printers.

Aerial footage showed a flurry of activity, including heavily armed SWAT team members flooding the 420-acre campus and patrol cars keeping a perimeter on city streets.
