Actor Shelley Malil wept as he was sentenced to up to life in prison for trying to murder his ex-girlfriend in a jealous frenzy.

Malil is best known for his role as the electronics store clerk in the Steve Carell hit comedy The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

"I don't even have the words to express my remorse," he told the judge.

The 45-year-old actor blamed the movie for all the attention his trial has received.

"Maybe it's because I was in a silly little movie that all this had to happen, but never did I ever want to not take responsibility," Malil said.

Malil stabbed his ex-girlfriend, Kendra Beebe, 23 times, inflicting horrific injuries, after her found her with another man.

"During the trial it became clear he was an actor, but not a very good actor at that. His testimony was lie after lie after lie," Beebe said as she gave a statement.

His victim wasn't impressed by his tears and pleas for forgiveness.

"He knew it was me begging him to stop each time he plunged the knife into my body as I gasped for breath!" Beebe continued.

Despite the life sentence, Malil could be eligible for parole in just nine years.
