Taylor had taken her sons, aged 12 to 17, to the rally in Dallas Thursday to teach them how to demonstrate in a peaceful manner, according to her sister.

The protests were in response to the recent fatal shootings of two black men at the hands of police.

While downtown, they heard gunfire.

"After that first gunshot, she heard the second gunshot, and after that it was just a lot of gunshots," Williams told local channel KTVT. "She said they just came so fast and they wouldn't stop."

Taylor was shot in the calf as she ran and jumped on top of her 15-year-old son. Her other sons were able to run away and became separated from their mom in the chaos.

Police came to her aid and she was taken to a nearby hospital. Her 15-year-old son was not injured.

"There wasn't much he could say," her sister said. "He was just scared. He's covered in his mom's blood, and he's standing there, and he's scared."
