Mike Pence officially accepted Donald Trump's invitation to run as vice president on Saturday.

"I accept your invitation to run and serve as vice president of the United States of America," the Indiana Governor said to a cheering New York crowd on Saturday after he was introduced by Trump.

After describing himself as "a Christian, a conservative, and a Republican -- in that order," Pence said he was looking forward to the "no-nonsense leadership" Trump will bring to Washington, D.C.

"Donald Trump is a good man and he will make a great president of the United States of America," he said. "Donald Trump gets it and he understands the American people. I truly am deeply humbled to be at his side today."

Pence spoke after more 25 minutes of remarks from Trump, who used the opportunity to slam Hillary Clinton as "corrupt." He also drew comparisons between Clinton and Pence, whom he called a "man of honor."

Following speculation that Trump's children had pushed their father to pick Pence, he insisted the governor was his "first choice."

"I've admired the work he's done," he said. "But I also admire the fact he fights for the people and he's going to fight for you. He's a solid, solid person."

The press conference came 24 hours after the presumptive Republican White House nominee announced his decision on Twitter. It followed weeks of speculation in what was beginning to look like an episode of The Apprentice.

Pence, along with New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, were considered the front runners for the job. But Trump went to the governor’s mansion on Wednesday, suggesting he would be the billionaire's pick.
