United in Grief: Kathie Lee Gifford and Celine Dion Discuss How They're Coping With Loss of Husbands
One's a renowned singer and the other's a nationally recognized talk show host, but Celine Dion and Kathie Lee Gifford have one heartbreaking thing in common: They both recently lost their husbands.
Appearing together in the fourth hour of the Today show, the two consoled each other and talked about how they're moving forward.
“I found the best man in the world, like you did for yourself and we were both extremely lucky,” Dion told the Today host on Friday's show.
“You have been, as I have been this last year, we have had quite the journey,” Gifford said.
Celine's manager husband, René Angélil, died of cancer in January.
Kathie Lee lost her husband, football and TV legend Frank Gifford, last August after nearly 30 years of marriage.
“You gave strength to everybody. Because you're strong, we can all be strong. Everybody is waiting to see how you're doing, you know? To give them permission to be okay," Gifford said.
Dion says she helped her three children deal with their father's passing by comparing it to the death of the wife Ellie in the animated film Up. She revealed that she and her children kiss a photo of their dad every day.
The singer’s conversation with Kathie Lee is triggering an outpouring of compassion on social media.
"Your openness is an inspiration to all those grieving," said one fan.
Dion also performed outside 30 Rock in a free summer concert for fans Friday morning.
