Spider Causes Terrified Driver to Flip Vehicle, Totaling It in Ditch

Distracted driving is the most common cause of accidents in the country.

A woman in Oregon got the fright of her life when a spider fell from her car mirror, and the ensuing panic caused her to flip her car over, rendering it undriveable.

On Wednesday morning around 8:20 a.m., the 45-year-old woman was driving in Portland when the spider dropped from her rearview mirror and dangled in front of her face, causing her to lose control and go off the road, according to authorities.

Her car rolled into a ditch, and when sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene, they said the car was totaled.

Officials said the driver suffered a minor scratch on her hand. Given the damage of the car, she was lucky to have been able to walk away from such a dramatic scene.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office closed the road to one lane to handle the crash site.

Sgt. Bob Ray told InsideEdition.com: “It is a good reminder we can expect the unexpected and not be distracted when driving. Think about what happens before it happens.”

Sgt. Ray added that “the situation could have been much worse.” He credits the design and safety features of new vehicles, like the 2011 Toyota Camry she was driving, for helping her walk away from the accident.

Distracted driving is the leading cause of accidents in America, Sgt. Ray said, but in his 23 years on the force, he said he has never heard of a spider causing an accident.

The spider may have fled the scene and was not found following the wreck.
