Suspect Arrested In 'Ambush-Style' Slayings of 2 Iowa Cops

Police in Des Moines say two area officers have been shot and killed in ambush-style attacks.

Police in Iowa's capital say the suspect wanted in connection to the "ambush-style" slayings of two officers there has been apprehended.

Des Moines police Sgt. Paul Parizek says Scott Michael Greene, 46, was arrested Wednesday morning after a manhunt that lasted several hours.

On Wednesday afternoon, the two slain officers were identified as Urbandale PD Officer Justin Martin and Sgt. Anthony Beminio of the Des Moines Police Department.

According to officials in Des Moines, both officers were inside their cruisers when they were shot dead in the early morning hours of Wednesday.

At an emotional press conference, Des Moines Police Sgt. Paul Parizek told reporters: “It doesn’t look like there was any interaction between these officers and whoever the coward is who shot them while they sat in their cars."

The first officer, Officer Martin, was killed in Urbandale, which borders Des Moines.

In the second shooting, Sgt. Beminio was shot after responding to the initial shooting and later transported to a hospital, where he died. The second shooting took place just blocks from the first, KCCI reports.

The Des Moines officer was transported to Methodist Hospital, where he died a short time later.

Beminio, a 39-year-old married father, had been with the Des Moines department since 2005 while Martin, 24, joined the force in Urbandale last year. He was single and had no children.

Parizek was clear that a danger remained for his colleagues.

"There is clearly a danger if you’re a police officer. These officers were gunned down sitting in their car doing nothing wrong, so there’s definitely some danger out there. There’s somebody out there shooting police officers. We hope we find him before anyone else gets hurt. We definitely don’t want anyone in the public or the community to get hurt," he told reporters.
