The school alerted its 65,000 students to run, hide or fight Monday morning.
An Ohio State University police officer is being hailed a hero for fatally shooting a student who plowed his car into a crowd at the school before stabbing people with a butcher knife.
Eleven people were injured in the attack at the campus in Columbus on Monday morning.
OSU police officer Alan Horujko, 28, who was in the area responding to a report of a gas leak, arrived on the scene just moments later.
"A police officer was on the scene within a minute and killed the assailant," said Ohio State Police Chief Craig Stone. "He engaged the suspect and eliminated the threat."
A federal law enforcement official told CBS News that the suspect had been identified as Abdul Ali Artan, an 18-year-old Somali refugee. State officials said it appears this is possibly an act of terrorism and the FBI and ATF have been sent to aid in the investigation.
Just before 10 a.m. Monday, the university had issued an active shooter alert, telling its 65,000 students to "Run Hide Fight."

Officials later said someone had run a car over a curb and into pedestrians before exiting the vehicle. The suspect, who was reportedly wielding a butcher knife, then slashed at and injured several people in the area, officials said.
After 11 a.m., police officials reported that the suspect was dead.
At 11:30 a.m., OSU Emergency Management posted on Twitter that the shelter in place alert had been called off. "Shelter in Place lifted. Scene is now secure. ALL classes are canceled on Columbus campus for the remainder of the day," the tweet read.

Despite initial reports of an active shooter, officials later said most of the injuries were stab wounds or the result of the crashed vehicle.
None of the injuries were considered life-threatening, though at least two of the pedestrians hit by the vehicle underwent surgery.
