INSIDE EDITION was at the first game played by high school athlete Wes Leonard's basketball team since Leonard suddenly died moments after last week's game.
It's a moment that will never be forgotten. 16-year-old Wes Leonard scored the winning basket for his undefeated high school team and then collapsed on the court with a fatal heart ailment.
INSIDE EDITION went to Fenville High School the night of the boys first basketball game since their beloved teammate passed.
The cheering shook the rafters as the players took to the floor. They all wore t-shirts with Leonard's number and the words "never forgotten." Leonard's brother Mitchell was an honorary member of the team.
Wes's parents were there to root for the team even though it was the eve of their sons buriel.
"Tonight, we seek to honor Wes's memory by participating in a game he loved," said Dirk Weeldryer the superintendent of Feville schools.
The sound of those words was too much for Wes's mom, Jocelyn. Her husband Gary comforted her as the game went on.
The final score of the game was Fenville 65, Lawrence 54. It was a bittersweet blend of grief and glory. Some wept openly, while others fought back tears.
"Wes was like a brother to us. We knew he'd want us to win another game," said one teammate.
Today, the players attended the funeral for Leonard. they walked past his coffin along with members of the Leonard family.
"I think he was watching down on us. His eyes were upon us," said Wes's coach.
