Woman Gives Birth in Dealership Bathroom While Getting Car Serviced: 'How Often Do You See That?'

Adam and Amanda Sherman welcomed Heather Lynn into the world in the bathroom of Pennsylvania's #1 Cochran Nissan of South Hills.

An expectant Pennsylvania couple bringing their pickup truck for routine maintenance took the dealership’s dedication to great service to heart, as the pair welcomed a baby girl into the world in the showroom bathroom.

As Adam and Amanda Sherman, both 24, made their way to #1 Cochran Nissan of South Hills to have their Nissan Titan’s oil changed on Monday, Amanda realized she had to use the bathroom, the couple told InsideEdition.com.

“I went to the restroom, and after I was done, I realized that I was going to have the baby,” Amanda said on Thursday. “It was literally like within three minutes of us being there.”

Adam was in the middle of talking to a service representative and getting the couple’s 14-month-old son, AJ, out of the truck as he was alerted to his wife’s situation.

"Someone came running out and said, 'somebody’s wife just delivered a baby in the bathroom.’ I can’t even explain what I was thinking," he laughed.

Amanda had also been able to fire off a text to Adam — "I’m having call no I just had it" — relaying the play-by-play of the lightning-fast delivery.

“I don’t know how I did that,” she said, laughing.

So Adam handed his son to an employee and ran into the bathroom.

“And there’s Amanda sitting on the toilet, holding the baby,” he said. “Amanda, she was saying she felt her water break, and with her water out came the baby.”

Six days early and weighing 7 pounds, 12 ounces, Heather Lynn Sherman came into the world quickly and without much fuss, as most of the dealership had no idea what had just taken place in its bathroom.

“We only heard a few screams. It was very quiet — very, very quiet,” Victoria Vendlinger, 31, who was working at the front desk, told InsideEdition.com. “There was a registered nurse sitting in our lobby, of all the customers that could be, and she went into the bathroom with me and the husband.  When I walked in I was like, 'oh my God, there’s a little baby!'"

A mother of three, Vendlinger said she’s no stranger to childbirth, but it was the last thing she expected to encounter at work.

“You never think you’re going to experience something like that in your life. It was just one of those amazing pieces of life; I could cry,” she said. “And what a strong woman to do that without freaking out.”

Paramedics arrived on the scene after a fast-thinking Adam had tied the baby’s umbilical cord with his shoelace, and after tending to Amanda and Heather Lynn on the scene, they whisked the pair away to Magee-Women’s Hospital of UPMC in Oakland.

“I’m just so relieved everything was okay with Amanda and the baby,” Vendlinger said.

The Shermans have since settled into life at home as a family of four, and have since made sure to get their truck serviced.

“We really needed that oil change,” Adam said. “I actually went back the very next day … They were like, ‘you’re back already?’ I said, 'yeah — no babies today, though.'"

The dealership noted on its website it "has a gift on the way for the whole family."

And while this is unbelievably the second baby born at the dealership in 20 years, Vendlinger said that many there are still in awe of the not-so-routine day that saw Heather Lynn come into the world.

"I'll never forget it. It’s just so exciting. People here... anybody who was on mechanics side, repair shop and managers' side didn’t believe it. They thought we were messing around; they thought it was a joke," she recalled. "When their daughter grows up, they can say, ‘'you got national recognition on the day of your birth.' How often do you see that?"
