A Nebraska mother has been sentenced to three years in prison after her baby suffered severe brain damage when she passed out drunk with him in a bathtub, authorities said.
Crystal Potts, 27, pleaded no contest in an Omaha courtroom to one count of negligent child abuse causing serious bodily harm.
Douglas County District Judge Thomas Otepka ordered Potts to serve the maximum sentence for the charge.
The woman told investigators she had consumed two wine coolers, two screwdrivers and two vodka shots before falling unconscious in the bath with her 6-month-old baby, Zyaire Person, the Omaha World-Herald reported.
Her boyfriend, William Person, discovered the mother and baby when he came home from work. Zyaire was face-down in the water with blood streaming from his nose, authorities said.
Now 1, the child requires round-the-clock care, including a feeding tube, and lives with his father, the paper said.
The mother hopes to return to her boyfriend when she is released from prison, her lawyer said.
