Patient, 83, Checks Himself Out Of Hospital Then Steals Ambulance To Get Home: Cops

An elderly New York man checked himself out of a hospital in the middle of the night this week then allegedly stole an ambulance in order to get home.

Donald Winkler, 83, reportedly was unhappy with the treatment he'd received after being admitted to Nassau University Medical Center Tuesday, so at 1 a.m., he checked himself out.

After walking out of the emergency room and into the parking lot, Nassau PD says Winkler noticed an ambulance with the keys in the ignition, got in and drove away.

Police found Winkler when someone called about a wellness check needed on a man at an area 7-Eleven.

When police met Winkler, they reported that he admitted to them that he'd stolen the ambulance, at which point the octogenarian reportedly was arrested.

After being taken back to Nassau University Medical Center for evaluation and treatment, Winkler was arraigned at his bedside on a charge of  second-degree grand larceny.
