The Associated Press claims in a report that in 2005, Manafort signed a secret contract with a Russian billionaire and was paid $10 million a year as a consultant to "benefit the Putin government."

This was more than a decade before he served as Trump's campaign manager. Manafort resigned from the campaign last August.

In a statement this week, Manafort insisted: "My work…did not involve representing Russian political interests."

The news comes on the heels of the growing question as to whether President Trump has a credibility gap.

An editorial in Wednesday’s Wall Street Journal argues that "Trump's falsehoods are eroding public trust, at home and abroad."

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said that Manafort played a “very limited role (in the campaign) for a very limited amount of time.”

Legendary Washington Post columnist Sally Quinn said on CNN, “Even though it’s not funny, I have to laugh.”
