One person was killed and three others were wounded in a "heinous" stabbing spree carried out by a student at the University of Texas in Austin, authorities said.

Kendrex J. White, 21, was armed with a large hunting knife when officers tackled him on campus after he allegedly stabbed four people Monday afternoon as he "calmly" walked among students, police said.

No motive was released by authorities.

Photos posted to social media showed a man with a bandana around his head, and a knife sheathed in a belt holster, being handcuffed by officers.

The attack occurred near Gregory Gym, according to the Austin Police Department.

Student Rachel Prichett said she was standing in line at a food truck when a man with a large knife approached someone behind her.

"The guy was standing next to me," she told The Associated Press. "He grabbed him by the shoulder and shoved the knife in it. I just started running as fast as I could.

Another witness told the Austin American Statesman that a man in a bandana "comes up and stabs the knife into the table and looks all of us in the eye... He pulls the knife out without saying anything and turns around to stab some guy in the back of the neck," said the witness, who asked not to be identified.

Classes and campus events were canceled Monday afternoon. Authorities declared the college was safe following the suspect's arrest.

"Our prayers go out to those affected," Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said, calling the attacks "heinous."

University Police Chief David Carter said the stabbings were within a one-block area as the assailant "calmly walked around the plaza."

Student Ray Arredondo was walking to his car, he said, when panicked people began running toward him.

"They were just screaming, 'Run! Get out of here!''' he told the wire service.

The attack comes just three days after a former student carrying a machete and other knives attacked students at Transylvania University in Kentucky. One student was hospitalized.

The University of Texas, which has 51,000 students, is one of the nation's largest. It is blocks from downtown Austin and the Texas Capitol building.
