Last Friday, two young Muslim women were being harassed by a racist aboard a train in Portland, Ore. Two of the heroes who came to their aid lost their lives after they were stabbed by the alleged attacker, a white supremacist.

Ricky Best, 53, was one of them. But as the Army vet lay dying on the train, a man allegedly stole his backpack and wedding ring.

Marcus Knight was on the platform nearby and said he was "shocked" to see what happened.

"I can't understand why somebody would do that to someone who lost their life," he told Inside Edition.

Cops released surveillance video of the man as he strode off with the backpack.

On Friday, a week after the stabbing, he was arrested.

He's been identified as 51-year-old George Tschaggeny. Police say he lives in a homeless encampment near the train station. They say he was wearing the stolen wedding ring when he was arrested.

He's been arrested numerous times before by Portland police. Now, he's charged with theft and abuse of a corpse.

Best's accused killer, Jeremy Christian, remains incarcerated following a bizarre court appearance Tuesday when he screamed out about free speech.

“Free speech or die in Portland," he shouted in court. "You got no safe place. This is America. Get out if you don't like free speech."

Christian, who has a history of white supremacist activity, allegedly taunted the two girls on the train because he thought they were Muslim.

“We cannot begin to understand this senseless act,” his family said in a statement. “We are praying for healing for everyone affected by the horrible actions of our son.”
