Sinead O'Connor Reveals Abused Past to Dr. Phil: 'What I Love About My Mother Is That She Is Dead'

The interview with the Irish singer kicks off Dr. Phil's 16th season on television.

Sinead O’Connor has revealed aspects of her painful past and her mental illness battle that spawned suicide attempts and fears for the Irish singer's well-being earlier this summer.

O'Connor recently sat down with Dr. Phil McGraw to discuss her demons, as well as the moment she ripped up a photo of Pope John Paul II during a controversial Saturday Night Live performance.

Dr. Phil will open his new season Tuesday with the interview, in which she spoke candidly about her troubles.

“I’m so grateful and very happy, very excited to be getting some proper help,” the "Nothing Compares 2 U" singer tells Dr. Phil. “The fact that there’s such stigma about mental illness means that the illness doesn’t get talked about.”

In a clip posted on his website Thursday, the singer also discussed the alleged sexual and physical abuse she claims to have endured as a child — at the hands of her own mother.

“Every day of our lives, she ran a torture chamber," she said. "She was a person who would delight in hurting you. I became very suicidal, I was a basket case."

She added: “What I love about my mother is that she is dead."

In the clip, she also says she tried to kill herself eight times in one year, prompting Dr. Phil to ask: “Do you want to be dead?”

In August, O’Connor posted a video on her Facebook page in which she pleaded for help from inside a New Jersey motel room. The video has since been removed from her page.

“I'm all by myself," she said in the video. "I've absolutely nobody in my life except my doctor. My entire life is revolving around just not dying and that's not living!”

She also claimed in the video that she had been abandoned by her family and friends.

After the video circulated around the world, a statement on her Facebook page said that O'Connor was “safe and receiving the best of care.”

The 16th season of Dr. Phil premiers Tuesday, Sept. 12.
