Mom Arrested After Leaving 3-Year-Old Alone in Car While Visiting Jail: Cops

The 21-year-old mother was arrested by Orange County deputies on Sunday.

A young mother was arrested in Florida over the weekend after cops say she left her child in a hot car while visiting a jail.

Rachael Etienne allegedly left the 3-year-old in the vehicle for more than 20 minutes without the engine running Sunday before a corrections officer making the rounds at the Orange County Jail discovered the child inside, deputies said.

Authorities said the temperature was 91 degrees with a heat index of 110 degrees and that the child was drenched in sweat, WKMG reported.

Etienne was found inside the jail, where she was visiting an inmate.

She was taken into custody and charged with child neglect after cops say she admitted to leaving the child alone for about 20 minutes.

The 21-year-old has since bonded out of jail.

The Department of Children and Families placed the child in the care of a family member.
