Michelle Obama Credits President's Mother on The Daily Show
Michelle Obama responds to those shocking details revealed in a new book about how President Obama smoked pot when he was in high school.
Jon Stewart said, "It's a little like, what is that? A script from a Cheech and Chong movie?"
Barack Obama: The Story by David Maraniss, a Pulitzer Prize-winning associate editor at The Washington Post, says that when young Barack was attending high school in Hawaii he belonged to, "a self-selected group of boys...who loved basketball and good times. Called themselves the Choom gang. Choom is a verb, meaning 'to smoke marijuana.' "
On The Daily Show Tuesday night, the First Lady said it was Obama's late mother who straightened him out.
Michelle said, "By the time he was in college, like so many young people, he realized that he could do more with his life. He had a mother that was always saying, 'You're so gifted, you're so talented,' slap him on the head; 'Get yourself together.' "
Obama has acknowledged smoking marijuana in high school. In audio read by the president from his book, Dreams From My Father, he says, "I spent the last two years of high school in a daze. Drank beer heavily and tried drugs enthusiastically."
Michelle said, "When he lost his father, that was one of those click-in moments. And he really buckled down, he transferred schools, went to Columbia and that's when he got really serious about, really thinking about how to use his life to the fullest."
But the First Lady doesn't condone her husband's pot smoking in high school.
Jon Stewart said, "I really related to that. It's the turn around."
"I'm not taking any bait," said Michelle.
