Drama on live TV as Barbara Walters refused to do a phone interview with George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer accused of murdering Trayvon Martin.
Zimmerman called in to The View just 10 minutes before the show wrapped for the day.
Walters said, "In my little earpiece I'm telling you that Zimmerman called. Yes? Zimmerman called. Well, Mr. Zimmerman, if you could not do the interview yesterday, we shouldn't do a quick one today."
Walters began the show explaining that she had flown to Florida on Wednesday expecting to interview Zimmerman when he suddenly made a surprise demand.
She said, "He would if there was one condition. It was a condition, that being a member of ABC News, I was unable to grant. Otherwise he would not do the interview."
She wouldn't say what the demand was, but published reports said Zimmerman wanted to be put up in a luxury hotel for a month, along with his wife.
"If, in the future you feel differently we will consider it," Walters said as the audience applauded her.
Zimmerman did talk to Fox News channel's Sean Hannity, apologizing to Trayvon Martin's parents.
Zimmerman said, "I am sorry that they buried their child. I can't imagine what it must feel like and I pray for them daily."
At one point he looked directly into the camera and addressed America.
"I do wish that there was something, anything, that I could have done, that wouldn't have put me in a position where I had to take his life," he said.
But asked if he had any regrets, he said, "no."
"I feel that it was all God's plan," he said.
Trayvon's parents were appalled.
"I don't think that God would have it in his plan to murder an innocent child," said Trayvon's mother.
Zimmerman claims he acted in self defense. He's currently out on bail, and living in an undisclosed "safe house" in Florida.
