After three years in prison, Drew Peterson's trial has finally begun in the murder of one of his ex-wives. INSIDE EDITION reports.
The trial of Drew Peterson, the former cop who laughed and wisecracked his way straight to jail, is finally underway.
For the last three years, 58-year-old Peterson has been held in isolation in a Chicago area jail.
Peterson's third wife, Kathleen Savio, was found dead in her bath in 2004. Her death was initially ruled an accident but after Peterson's fourth wife, Stacy disappeared without a trace, the investigation into Savio's death was re-opened and he was charged with murder.
Defense attorney Joel Brodsky told INSIDE EDITION, "There is nothing here except myth, hearsay, legend and rumor. That's all the state has and when the jury sees that, he's confident he'll be acquitted."
Peterson's arrogant attitude riled investigators and the public. Peterson had a radio confrontation with Geraldo Rivera before the arrest.
Rivera said on Fox News, "Is this Drew Peterson?"
"It sure is. How've you been?" said Peterson.
"Oh, I don't think I have much to say to you, except that I can't wait until you get indicted. I think that you're a repulsive person and I think you murdered both your wives," said Rivera.
"Well, that's wrong and I'm glad you're an objective reporter, here," replied Peterson.
And in an interview with INSIDE EDITION before his arrest, Peterson insisted he is innocent.
INSIDE EDITION's Paul Boyd asked, "Did you have anything to do with Kathleen's death?"
"No," answered Peterson.
"You didn't bring anyone else into this picture? You didn't hire anybody to go and kill Kathleen?" asked Boyd.
"Absolutely not," answered Peterson.
"There are a lot of people out there who don't believe anything you say," said Boyd.
"All I can tell them is, I've done nothing wrong," said Peterson.
Peterson does have supporters. A published report says he exchanged love letters from behind bars with a woman half his age.
"I do love you and am hoping for a future with us. Hang on to that sweetie," he reportedly wrote to her.
His attorney says Drew Peterson does get fan mail but doesn't remember writing a letter like that. In any case, Peterson claims no matter what the verdict, he is done with marriage.
"After four times, I don't think that marriage is something he's really looking forward to again," said Brodsky.
