Police Lift Taxi Cab Off Trapped Pedestrian

Airdate: 01/14/2013

A camera was rolling as a team of cops lifted a taxi off a trapped pedestrian with their bare hands.

The drama happened on a street in the South Bronx section of New York City.

This witness, who shot the video from his third-floor apartment, said the pedestrian ran right into the cab's path. In the video, you could hear the trapped man screaming.

Enrique Elias, who shot the video, told INSIDE EDITION, "I heard the sergeant say 'Is there a jack?' And there was no jack."

There's only one thing the cops can do. They come together and lift the two-ton taxi. They moved the taxi enough for the victim to be pulled out from under.

"It was phenomenal. They saved that man's life," said Elias.

The victim was rushed to the hospital where he is in critical condition.

The rescue is an echo of another famous incident, this one near Salt Lake City, when a dozen brave passers-by ignored the danger from a blazing motorcycle and lifted a car off the trapped rider.

There was also the dramatic moment when heroes rescued a first-grader who was pinned under a car at his school in Boca Raton.

Now add the NYPD to the list of heave-ho heroes.
