Teacher Fired Because Of Abusive Ex-Husband

Carie Charlesworth was just fired from her job as a second grade teacher, and the reason may shock you.

"I was devestated," she said.

It was because her ex-husband Martin showed up at her school outside San Diego. The school was put in lockdown, and then, to Carie's amazement, she was fired.

“I never thought in a million years that my school community, my religious community, would be the first one to shut me out,” said Carie.
The San Diego Archdiocese sent her a letter, reading, "In the interest of the safety of the students, faculty and parents... we simply cannot allow you to return to work."

That wasn't all. Carie's four young children attend Holy Trinity. “They've decided that my children and I were to basically stay away from the school,” said Carie. That's right! Carie lost her job and her kids were kicked out of school.

“I did everything that I had been told to do. I left, I filed charges, I testified, I got protective orders, I told my employer," she said.

Carie believes her firing was a knee jerk reaction in the wake of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut six months ago.

She has a restraining order against her husband who she says beat her several times. He's in jail now for making threats against her, but will be released sometime this summer.

"As a parent, I get that. I get that everyone is concerned about the safety of their children," said Carie. "But I don't think the answer is to push people out."

The letter to Carie from the school states, "Please understand that this was a very difficult decision to make and we are deeply, deeply sorry about this situation. We will continue to pray for you and your family."

Carie also fears she'll be further victimized because of what she describes as her ex-husband's history of abuse. “Can I not go to a restaurant because I'm considered a threat if I sit down for dinner? If I go to the mall, am I considered a threat because he might come find me at the mall?"
