Marijuana Evidence Brought Into George Zimmerman Trial

It may have been the most controversial moment in the George Zimmerman trial. The jury was about to be told that Trayvon Martin had marijuana in his system when he was shot.

CNN legal analyst Vinnie Politan said, "This allows the defense to trash Trayvon Martin, to portray him as someone who was fueled by marijuana in this vicious attack on George Zimmerman."

The judge had earlier suppressed evidence of Trayvon smoking pot, but she has now changed her decision.

The judge said in court, “To not allow that testimony to come in would be reversible error.”

On The View, Whoopi Goldberg said the defense is putting the victim on trial.

“I find it horrifying they want to now introduce this, only to try to damage this young man's reputation,” said Goldberg.

Barbara Walters replied, “Let's say he did! It has nothing to do with what happened.”

But defense lawyer Mark O’Mara told CNN Monday night that Trayvon’s pot smoking may have been a factor in the fight with Zimmerman.

O'Mara said, "There have been some studies out there, particularly with young males, that suggest that even low levels of cannabis use can lead to some aggression."

Meanwhile, a new movie about a real-life shooting that bears a striking resemblance to the Trayvon Martin case premiered in New York Monday night. The film tells the story of 23-year-old Oscar Grant who was shot by a police officer at a San Francisco train station in 2009 on New Years Day. The incident was caught on video. The movie, Fruitvale Station stars Oscar winner Octavia Spencer of The Help.

Spencer spoke to INSIDE EDITION about the similarities of the two tragedies, “Two young men of color taken at the prime of their youth in needless ways. So, I’m glad the movie is promoting a discourse that needs to happen.”

Movie tycoon Harvey Weinstein is distributing the movie.

He told INSIDE EDITION, “With the Trayvon Martin / George Zimmerman case out there right now, it’s just impossible to ignore this.”
