Newlywed Murder Trial Results in Hung Jury

After a guilty verdict was overturned, Ryan Widmer faced a second trial for the murder of his wife of just four months. The second trial has resulted in a hung jury. INSIDE EDITION has the story.

Prosecutors claimed Ryan Widmer drowned his wife in the bathtub after just four months of marriage. But jurors couldn't agree on a verdict. After four days of deliberations there is a hung jury.

"I just want this to be over. I'm disappointed. I should have been found not guilty," said Widmer.

Exhibit "A" during the trial was the bathtub where 24-year-old Sarah Widmer drowned.

In a 911 call, Ryan Widmer claimed he found his bride dead—drowned after falling asleep in the tub.

"She fell asleep in the bathtub, I think. I was downstairs. I just came up here and she was lying face down in the bathtub," Widmer told the 911 operator.

But prosecutors say that scenario is impossible. Widmer was found guilty at his first trial, but that verdict was overturned because of juror misconduct.

Now the second trial has resulted in a hung jury, and the Ohio judge will now have to decide whether to dismiss the charges altogether or order a third trial.

Jurors were not allowed to see a shocking police demonstration which shows how the murder may have been committed. In the video, only the victim's head and arms are held under water. Prosecutors believe this method explains these mysterious streaks on the inside of the tub—marks caused, they claim, as Sarah Widmer fought for her life.
