New York Shows St. Louis How to Cut a Bagel

One slice, horizontally, all the way.

St. Louis, New York has a message for you: You're doing it wrong.

Inside Edition visited Ess-a-Bagel in Manhattan, the unofficial bagel capital of the world, to get their take on the St. Louis-style bagel, i.e. bagels sliced multiple times vertically instead of a single slice horizontally.

"I'm really appalled," an Ess-a-Bagel employee said. "In New York we slice the bagels straight down the middle ... there's no other way to do it."

St. Louis was thrust into the nationwide spotlight when Midwesterner Alek Krautmann tweeted a picture of his bagel order. "Today I introduced my coworkers to the St Louis secret of ordering bagels bread sliced. It was a hit!" he wrote, together with a picture of the order.

Customers at Ess-a-Bagel were also outraged when Inside Edition told them the story. "I would never do it ... but I'll eat it," one person said, taking a slice of bagel bread.

"Thank you," added another.
