He's the unemployed Wall Street banker who became world famous when he walked up and down New York streets wearing a homemade sandwich board straight out of the Great Depression. The sign read: "Experienced MIT grad for hire."

Now, nine months later, Joshua Persky is still unemployed. He says, "It's terrifying not to be able to support your family."

He's handed out hundreds of resumes and checks his mail box everyday hoping for any job offer.

INSIDE EDITION talked with career coach Kate Wendleton, and asked her to share her best employment advice. "You don't just start sending out your resume, you make up a targeted list."

Wendleton says laid off workers like Persky need to go after jobs that aren't advertised online or in the papers. "Most people want to take the easy way out...and have someone find a job for them," she says.

Experts say in today's tough economy, it's better to hang on to the job you have, rather than risk everything for a higher paying job that may offer less security.

Stephen Viscusi, author of the new book Bulletproof Your Job, says, "It's the highest rate of unemployment in six years and when you lose your job today it takes a very long time to find one."

Viscusi says the best advice he can offer – get along with your boss. "It's easy to fire an employee you don't like; it's hard to fire an employee you like and know a little bit about on a personal level."

Sharing some other tips in "bulletproofing" your job, the author says:

  • Dress upward – always look as good as you can.
  • Create a network of mentors in your company.
  • Be punctual.
  • Don't abuse sick days.
  • Create the perception that you're always there and ready to work.

With the help of these simple tips, hopefully you'll be able to keep your job safe, even in troubled times.
