Fly-By Furor

Airdate: 2/26/2008

It’s the video creating an international storm of controversy.

An airliner does an unauthorized fly-by over a Seattle-area airport just 28 feet off the ground!

Take a closer look: the landing gear is not down.  The pilot is buzzing the airport at 320 miles an hour, just for fun!

You can hear spectators cry out in shock as the plane comes in.

These amazing still photos were shot by spectator Liem Bahnem.

“I heard a whistle and I looked out of my truck and it was coming back, so I grabbed my camera and ran to the hill and [the plane] did this flyby, and it was pretty low.

The brand new $200 million Boeing 777 airliner had just been picked up from the Boeing Corporation by Hong Kong-based airline Cathay Pacific.  It was carrying VIPs including the airline’s chairman.

A few minutes after taking off, the 55-year-old pilot wheels around and performs a “Top Gun”-style fly-by, buzzing the airport at treetop height, to celebrate the inaugural flight.

ABC News aviation expert tells INSIDE EDITION,

“The danger if you didn’t get a clearance from the tower, you are completely violating FAA rules, and that’s more than dangerous.”

Spectators shot these dramatic home videos of the dangerous maneuver.

The incident happened January 30th, but the video just hit YouTube, and the veteran pilot has now been fired from his $500,000 a year job.  The pilot is appealing that decision.
