Rock Stars vs. Political Candidates

Airdate: 10/20/2008

They are the tunes incite crowds of supporters on the campaign trail. However, now some musicians are telling John McCain to stop the music.

When Sarah Palin joined John McCain, her moniker "Sarah Barracuda" seemed a perfect fit for the classic tune "Barracuda" by the group Heart. It was even used during the Republican National Convention. But, the music group sent the McCain campaign a cease and desist letter, saying "We have asked the Republican campaign publicly to not use our music. We hope our wishes will be honored."

McCain has also used John Mellencamp's Americana song "Pink Houses" despite the fact that Mellencamp is a vocal supporter of Barack Obama. The superstar rocker has even performed at the Democrat's rallies.

Jon Bon Jovi and the Foo Fighters have also asked McCain to stop using their songs.

Beth Frerking of Politico says, "Clearly they disagree with the politics of the people using their songs and they don't think it's fair for them to be used to in a way that attracts voters to their causes."

The issue has gotten downright nasty. McCain is being sued by Jackson Browne, who says his song "Running on Empty" was used in a McCain commercial without his permission.

Browne's attorney Larry Iser spoke with INSIDE EDITION. "His fans contacted us and his fans were confused by the thought that Jackson Browne, a well known liberal, would be lending his song and his voice and his persona to support John McCain, particularly in a commercial that's bashing Barack Obama."

However, the musical controversy is a bipartisan problem. Barack Obama has also been put on notice.

Sam Moore, one half of the famous "Soul Man" duo Sam and Dave, is telling Obama to stop using a song called "Hold On, I'm Coming."

INSIDE EDITION's Diane McInerney spoke with Moore about the song. "I would have liked to be asked. I don't want anyone on either side to feel as though I'm endorsing either Senator Obama or Senator McCain," says the musician.
