The Kid Who Hacked Miley Cyrus
Airdate: 3/9/2009
It was the scandal that damaged Miley Cyrus's squeaky-clean image.
Risqué photos, stolen from her private email account, were posted online for all the world to see...and now INSIDE EDITION reveals the 19-year-old hacker who claims he's responsible.
On the internet he calls himself "Trainreq." His real name is Josh Holly, and even though this teenage computer geek could face federal criminal charges, he can't wait to brag about stealing Miley's photos.
"Hey. I was able to get, like these exclusive things. No one has ever seen these before," says Holly.
The provocative pictures show a 15-year-old Miley in poses her fans never expected to see. In one shot, she's standing in the shower wearing a t-shirt and blowing a kiss to her cell phone camera, with her midriff exposed.
He says Miley had emailed the photos to her then-boyfriend Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers. In one, she's even wearing a necklace bearing his name.
In the wake of the scandal, Miley apologized to her fans. But Josh Holly isn't sorry. In fact, the pictures are still up on his personal website.
"My only regret is actually being caught," Holly says.
And Miley Cyrus isn't the only celebrity whose privacy Holly claims to have invaded. He says he gained access to the MySpace passwords of Rihanna and Chris Brown, and actor Seth Rogan. He says he used the celebrity accounts in a spamming scheme that brought in more than $100,000.
"It was very easy."
So how exactly did Josh Holly steal the Miley photos? He hacked into MySpace and found Miley's MySpace password, which he then plugged into one of her old email accounts. She had used the same password for both, something experts say you should never do.
"It's probably pretty smart not to use the same password for both accounts…change them frequently," says FBI agent Austin Berglas.
So, why'd he do it? Holly says, "It's fun and it's challenging. It's just like a game." Holly bragged online that he'd never be caught. Just hours later, his house was raided by the FBI.
Holly has not yet been charged with any crime. He says he's worried about going to jail for what he did to Miley Cyrus, but when asked if he is still hacking, Holly says: "If you want a direct yes or no answer…yes."
