The Monster Kidnapper
Airdate: 8/28/2009
Phillip Garrido has a long history of monstrous behavior, including a previous conviction for kidnapping and rape.
"The citizens should be outraged that a predator like him was freed to prey upon someone else, only this time unfortunately an 11-year-old child," says former U.S. Attorney Leland Lutfy.
In 1977, Garrido, then 25, abducted a woman from a Lake Tahoe parking lot, took her to a warehouse, and raped her. The warehouse was filled with pornographic magazines, a movie projector, and a spotlight.
"He had induced this young lady to get into his vehicle, he then tied her up, threw a dirty blanket on top of her and put her on the floor of the backseat, all the time taking LSD, and describing to her in graphic detail what he was going to do to her," says Lutfy.
The prosecutor of the case shares his outrage that Garrido was released, only to then allegedly kidnap Jaycee Lee Dugard and imprison her for 18 years.
"What was your reaction when you learned that he was arrested for another horrific crime?" INSIDE EDITION's Diane McInerney asks Lutfy.
"I'm shocked at what this child had to go through for the last 18 years, but unfortunately not shocked at the depravity of this man," he says.
Garrido was sentenced to 50 years at the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas. There, he met his wife, Nancy, the niece of another prisoner. They got married behind prison walls. Garrido's brother calls the woman a "robot" and compares the relationship to Charles Manson and the notorious Manson girls.
Garrido was paroled in 1988, having served just 11 years. He moved into the home where he built the backyard from hell.
Garrido's own brother calls him a "fruitcake" and an "idiot." Now, the prosecutor who hoped Garrido would never be freed to victimize another young woman can barely contain his anger.
"What do you think should happen now?" asks McInerney.
"I think he should be tried, I think he should be convicted, and I think they should throw the key away," Lutfy says.
