James A. Ray Cancels Upcoming Events
Airdate: 10/29/2009
Self help guru James A. Ray has canceled all his upcoming events. Hundreds of people who turned up to see Ray at a seminar in Toronto were turned away.
Later that night, Ray gave this explanation on his website:
"I must dedicate all of my physical and emotional energies to helping...get to the bottom of what happened."
But there was more trouble for Ray today as
Good Morning America
unearthed a never-before-broadcast interview with Ray.
He makes appalling comments about the Holocaust: "I know people for instance of the Jewish faith and heritage who don't necessarily believe that the Holocaust was bad. Now that might be shocking to you but I have people on record who have said, 'Hey there's a lot of good things that came out of that, a lot of lessons, a lot of opportunities for the world.' "
Co-host Robin Roberts expressed shock after hearing Ray's remark. "I'm having trouble getting past what he said about the Holocaust."
And one of Ray's former spiritual teachers is now speaking out. Matthew James says he broke with Ray four years ago.
"Was James A. Ray qualified to teach these events?" asked INSIDE EDITION's Megan Alexander.
"I remember when he was attending the trainings, that he definitely wanted to be out there in front of large groups and I remember him expressing that, and clearly, after only taking a handful of trainings, he began to teach some of the things we had specifically said people aren't allowed to teach. A person picks up a book, they read it, they think they know something and they begin to teach it," James said.
Ray's attorney has called the incident a terrible tragedy but is also distancing his client from it, saying he was not the one responsible for the design, construction, or maintenance of the sweat lodge.
