Is There a Jackson Curse?
Airdate: 11/18/2009
There's been a new bizarre twist in the Michael Jackson saga: the father of the first boy to accuse Jackson of child molestation has taken his own life.
65-year-old dentist Evan Chandler was found with a bullet wound to the head inside his apartment in a luxury high rise overlooking Manhattan. He was reportedly found lying on his bed still holding his .38 caliber revolver.
The
New York Post
called it a "Jacko Curse."
Chandler's doctor raised the alarm after he missed an appointment. He was being treated for a serious illness. "It's sad, because this wasn’t the way we thought things would end for this particular patient," says oncologist Dr. Mark Chaitowitz.
Jackson paid $23 million in an out of court settlement after Chandler's then 13-year-old son accused Jackson of molesting him in 1993. But Evan Chandler continued to be tormented by the Jackson saga.
"We were all wearing bulletproof vests, we were all armed. We had loaded shotguns in the house." The dead man's brother, Raymond, told INSIDE EDITION in 1998 that the family was constantly threatened by angry Jackson fans. "One night there were shots fired at the house. Once someone left a dead rat with its head cut off."
Evan Chandler was so afraid Jackson's fans would recognize him he reportedly had repeated plastic surgery, just like Jackson.
Meanwhile, Janet Jackson is talking about her attempts to get Michael to quit his dependence on prescription drugs. In an interview airing Wednesday night, Janet tells
Good Morning America
's Robin Roberts the family staged many interventions.
"That's what you do. Those are the things you do when you love someone. You can't just let them continue on in that way. And we did a few times...[but] we weren't very successful."
The police investigation into Michael Jackson's death continues. Dr. Conrad Murray admits administering medication to the singer to help him sleep, but denies any wrongdoing.
