Suspended College Soccer Player Speaks Out About Brutal Video

Airdate: 11/18/2009
She yanked one opponent to the ground by her ponytail, elbowed another in the back, and ran roughshod over a third.

Now the college soccer player whose violent play sparked national outrage is speaking out for the first time.

In an interview with The New York Times, 20-year-old Elizabeth Lambert said:  "That is not me. I have so much regret."

She's been suspended indefinitely from the University of New Mexico women's soccer team and reveals she has trouble sleeping and sometimes wakes up in a sweat.

"I'll be angry with myself that I did this, to my team, my university, that I did this to women's soccer, and I'll be sad that people want to see me suffer."

The video of Lambert's meltdown has become an internet sensation with one website labeling her "America's Greatest Villain."

"It did make me look like a monster," she said. "That's not the type of player I am."

She admitted her emotions got the better of her during the game: "I definitely feel because I am a female it did bring about a lot more attention than if a male were to do it...In that one moment, I let it all get into my head."

Lambert is now seeing a clinical psychologist and she hopes to be reinstated to the team next year.
